Students at York St. John University are taking over York Theatre Royal – for a week-long arts festival.
The York Theatre Royal Takeover 2022 kicks off today (9 May) and runs until Saturday 14 May.
The festival has been completely developed and produced by performance students and alumni from the school of arts at York St. John University – and gives young people the opportunity to gain real-life work experience with support from industry professionals.
Performances are based around the theme ‘The Unspoken’ and will combine local and personal stories through interactive theatre, one-person shows and comedy.
The festival will close with comedian Seann Walsh who, along with his stand-up, has appeared on panel shows such as 8 Out of 10 Cats and Celebrity Juice.
The Takeover festival is now in its tenth year.
Dr Sarah O’Brien, associate head of school of the arts at York St John University said: “We are so pleased that as part of our partnership with York Theatre Royal, York St John University can offer students experiences that are central to the theatre and events industry.
“For Takeover, our students are marketing, directing and producing a festival at this international venue. In addition, they’re making vital contacts they will rely on in the future and they are learning about the industry ‘on the job’.
“Our students are also performing work as part of the festival alongside professionals at all stages of their career.”
