A unique York bar which came with its own escape rooms has shut for good.
The Piccadilly Café Bar, on the street with the same name, has closed and will not now reopen, the owners told YorkMix.
It opened under its original name, Rehab, in September 2019.
Vicky Lu Evans and her husband Simon, the owners of the hugely successful bar The Habit on Goodramgate, were behind Rehab.
They transformed what was previously the premises of Veeno wine bar into a modern café bar. It served up daytime coffees and lunches, and became a buzzier cocktail bar at night.
What was unique about Rehab Piccadilly was the Harry Potter inspired escape room created in the basement.
It opened at the end of 2020, when the hospitality industry was still reeling from the impact of the pandemic, but soon proved popular with families, friends and strategy fans.
Another escape room on a Viking theme was also planned.
The venue was given its new name The Piccadilly Café Bar in March 2022, when the kitchen was also refurbished.
Later the café bar was put up for sale with an asking price of £195K.
Vicky told YorkMix: “We have decided to close the Piccadilly after an 18-month effort to sell the business, which unfortunately yielded no success.
“The passing of my father three years ago, in a sudden and unexpected manner, left me with no opportunity to bid farewell.
“Now, with my mother living alone, I find myself compelled to prioritise family obligations. In the past eight months alone, I have made two trips back to China to be with her.
“While the journey with the Piccadilly has been an immensely fulfilling one, evidenced by the daily influx of inquiries for the Harry Potter escape room, I must acknowledge the need to prioritise personal responsibilities above all else.
“I am greatly proud of the successful adventure the Piccadilly has been.”
