If you’re looking to stay at the seaside without busting your budget, North Yorkshire has the answer.

Not only does Filey boast one the best sandy beaches around, friendly people, eye-catching art and colourful beach huts, it is also kind on your pocket.

So much so that it has been named by consumer champions Which? as one of the six best budget seaside towns in Britain.

Which? asked its members to rate the quality of nearly 100 coastal towns and villages, and then worked out the costs associated with each.

With a rating of 81% and average hotel price per night of £98, Filey was second overall. Not only that, the much loved town of Scarborough came in sixth, with a 71% rating, and average hotel price of £85.

Here’s what Which? said about Filey

“Which? members awarded this former fishing town four stars for its peace and quiet, along with five stars across the board for its beaches and seafront.

“That said, steer clear if activities and browsing shops are a priority for you – Filey scored just two stars for its scant tourist attractions and shopping opportunities.

“But, if you’re looking for serenity on a budget, it’s worth knowing that this location was rated five stars for value for money, with an average hotel price per night of £98.”

As for Scarborough, here is the Which? verdict:

“While the higher scoring Filey offers slightly less buzz for a UK stay, the famous Scarborough is a go-to for diverting holidays, well suited to family trips.

“One of Britain’s first seaside resorts – and Yorkshire’s largest to this day – this richly historical seaside destination won four stars for its beaches, plentiful tourist attractions and dramatic scenery.

“But despite its enduring popularity this destination remains budget friendly, with the average hotel price sitting at £85 per night. “
