A group that promotes outdoor gyms and provides free pop-up workouts in York is creating two new versions – with the help of a city business.
Move the Masses promotes spaces all over the city where people of all ages and abilities can exercise for free.
They call these ‘Move Zones’ and create a range of workouts at each site, helping people by giving them a video workout to follow which explains how to exercise using the equipment.
Now property developer North Star are sponsoring two new Move Zones – in Stray Road and Glen Gardens
Hundreds get fit
Move Zones are particularly useful to people who face barriers going to traditional gyms.
Typically these barriers include inability to pay or commit to paid memberships, a lack of physical or social mobility, and low self-confidence.
Since August 2018 Move the Masses has created workouts at 12 Move Zones in York providing opportunities for hundreds of people to stay mentally and physical fit – increasing wellbeing, breaking down barriers, and regenerating public spaces.
They also provide opportunities to attend free pop-up workouts led by their qualified instructors.
A spokesperson for North Star said:
As a socially responsible local developer, it’s important to us that we not only engage with, but also support the communities we’re in.
Our gasworks development will have a large focus on mental and physical wellbeing for our residents and the wider community – including resident welfare sessions, a trim trail and large green space – so we were really keen to get behind an excellent initiative like Move the Masses.
Founder of Move the Masses Egg Cameron said: “Having local businesses support us means we can keep growing and developing our projects and increasing our reach in the city.”
