Two men are in custody following a rape in York.
They were arrested last night on suspicion of the crime. They are aged 18 and 20.
The incident occurred between 3.30am and 4am yesterday (Wednesday) in the Piccadilly and North Street areas.
The arrests followed an extensive investigation by North Yorkshire Police, including CCTV and forensic examination.
Detective Chief Inspector Shaun Page said: “This is a shocking incident, and I understand it will have caused significant concern in the local community.
“Two suspects have now been arrested, and our enquiries are ongoing, so I would urge anyone who has information that could assist us to get in touch.
“Officers from York’s Neighbourhood Policing Team will be on patrol in the city centre today and into the weekend, and will be able to provide extra reassurance to members of the public.”
The victim is continuing to receive specialist support.
Yesterday, police had two cordons in place. One sealed off the walkway between the Coppergate Centre and the River Foss.
Another surrounded a bench in North Street Gardens.
