Two friends from Rome have brought the authentic taste of Italian food to the streets of York.
Alessandro Venturi and Robin George this week opened up A’Roma Pasta Bar on Silver Street, next to Shambles Market.
It serves up a mix of home-made pasta dishes, bread and cakes. And they chose York for their new business because “it’s a Roman city”.
They are determined to make no compromises, and their dishes – including carbonara, which originates from Rome – are the “real deal” says Alessandro.
“It’s an authentic way to experience a Roman meal,” Robin says.
Michelin-starred mentor

They use both dry and fresh pasta in their dishes, and cook it al dente – which is not only the true Italian way, but is also healthier and easier to digest, says Robin.
Pasta sauces include aglio ed olio (£4.50), arrabiata (£4.90) and alfredo (£7).
Drinks are also Italian, including the citrus flavoured chinotto (£1.50). Crostatine tarts (£2.50) are among the desserts.
Alessandro took a degree in philosophy before deciding to become a chef. He was inspired by his grandmother, and still uses some of her recipes.
He was mentored by Michelin-starred chef Vitantonio Lombardo, and worked in top kitchens in Italy, France and the UK – including Meltons in York.
In Britain he met up with his old school mate Robin, now a businessman – and together they hatched the plan for A’Roma.
The food is served 10am-5pm every day.
