Firefighters were called in after boats were set adrift on the river in York.
It happened at 11.12am near Fishergate.
A North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service spokesperson said: “Crews from York resecured two boats back onto the moorings after being deliberately released by a member of the public.
“Crews used reach poles and throw lines to retrieve the vessels.”
