North Yorkshire Police says two people have been arrested today on suspicion of dog theft.
The York officers gave no further details but said it was following a crackdown on recent trends of dog thefts across the country.
They added “We want to send a clear message to these people that we are aware and that we are on the lookout and those responsible will be dealt with”
The police say recent reports suggest that thieves are using vans made to look like legitimate business vehicles and are going door to door to distract owners and attempt to steal pets.
Officers say residents should be vigilant and report any suspicious vehicles.
