Looks like Heston was checking out the competition last night (February 25)…

Riverside restaurant The Star Inn The City played host to superchef Heston Blumenthal when he made a surprise visit to the Museum Gardens venue.

The man behind Channel 4 series like Heston’s Great British Food rang half an hour before arriving to book a table for him and a group of friends.

The Star Inn The City was opened last October by award-winning chef Andrew Pern and business partner Justin Brosenitz, and specialises in Yorkshire dishes made with local produce.

Of course that meant there were none of Heston’s signature dishes like snail porridge or bacon and eggs ice cream on the menu.

So what did he eat?

The chef shared two starters: the “posh” prawn cocktail with bloody Mary sorbet (£12) and the ravioli of salt-baked “Vallum Farm” beetroot (£9.50).

For his main course he then enjoyed a rare steak (£25), with home-made rhubarb schnapps to finish.

Let’s face it, Heston can’t be an easy man to impress.

This is the man who owns The Fat Duck, a three-Michelin-starred restaurant in Berkshire, which has been voted Britain’s best restaurant and received a perfect score by The Good Food Guide every year since it opened in 2007.

But Emma Butler of the Star Inn The City said he really enjoyed his meal.

“He was very friendly and after his meal went into the kitchen to thank the chef and the team.”

Emma Tweeted out a photo with the words: “Never a dull moment at the City branch!”

In York to film a segment about chocolate for his series Heston’s Fantastical Food, the chef had earlier visited Nestlé.

Heston is only the latest famous name to go on a night out in York.

World renowned physicist Professor Stephen Hawking called in at the Biltmore Bar last month.
