Alan moved to York from the village of Cattal when he left the BBC 15 years ago.
He became an accomplished genealogist specialising in researching the history of the First World War.
BBC Radio York Presenter Jonathan Cowap said: “Alan was a man of high standards, loyalty and integrity. There are many people in broadcasting today who remember with affection and appreciation the training which he gave them.”
“The kindness and care shown to him by the team at the hospice was exceptional.
“I shall miss his friendship, wisdom and wicked sense of humour more than I can tell you.
“Please raise a glass to Alan – a legend.”
Former Radio York editor Simon Pattern said: “The world is sadder at his departure, but richer for the time he spent on it.”
Alan did not wish to have any kind of funeral ceremony and his ashes will be scattered in the Yorkshire countryside.
