Trees uprooted, power lines down and a car port blown away – Storm Arwen hits North Yorkshire

Storm Arwen has hit North Yorkshire, making it a busy night for the emergency services.

Firefighters were called out to numerous weather-related incidents overnight.

Trees were uprooted, and some hit cars. In one case a car port was blown into a house.

There are no reports of any casualties as yet.

The storm brought heavy rain, snow showers, and high winds, and a yellow wind warning from the Met Office is still in force. North Yorkshire County Council has called on people to consider whether their journey is necessary as the problems continue today.

There are reports of trees down near Elvington this morning.

Here are the incidents North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service were called to overnight.

8.38pm Horton-in-Ribblesdale, Settle: A 40m tree fell onto vehicles and outbuildings

9.29pm  Londonderry, near Northallerton: A 7m tree which fell onto a building, damaging roof tiles and coming to rest against a propane tank. Firefighters isolated the tank and removed the tree.

9.48pm  Hargill, Gilling West: A passing motorist reported a tree had fallen onto a car. When firefighters arrived, the vehicle had left scene. Together with police they cleared debris from the road.

9.50pm Church Close, Killinghall: Harrogate firefighters used the aerial ladder platform to remove large sections of a flat roof from a dormer after the roof had started flapping due to the high winds. Crews worked for almost two hours until the roof was removed.

9.54pm  Station View, Harrogate: Fire crews used a saw to clear access to a premises for disabled residents following a tree falling at the entrance.

10.04pm  Low Green, Eppleby: A tree fell onto power lines. Firefighters made the area safe and installed a cordon.

10.09pm  Main Street, Kirk Deighton: Knaresborough firefighters responded to a sparking low voltage power line damaged in the wind. They installed a cordon. Northern Powergrid informed.

10.51pm Meadow Lane, Northallerton: Firefighters cut away parts of a fallen tree which was blocking access to a house.

2.11am  The Green, Brompton: Northallerton firefighters responded to a caller who believed his roof had blown off. On arrival fire crew found a three-car carport wedged against the side of the house. They cut up the structure up. It isn’t known where the carport had come from.

2.22am  Northallerton Road, Thirsk: Thirsk firefighters responded after a tree had fallen hitting a car. On arrival, the driver had removed the tree from the road.

3.08am  Overdale Park, Skipton: Fire crews removed a shed roof from the outside of a premises after the caller thought it was part of his roof.

3.46am A65, Thornton in Craven: Skipton firefighters responded to a police request to carry out scene safety after a car had struck a fallen tree and was leaking fuel.

4.56am Broughton Road, Skipton: The same Skipton crew came across another vehicle which had struck a fallen tree. No one was injured and firefighters moved the car to the side of road.
