Police are warning of treacherous driving conditions thanks to snow in parts of North Yorkshire and heavy rain and flooding in York.
In a post late on Sunday night, the force said “some areas of the county are becoming very difficult to travel around tonight.
“That’s hampering our ability to get to people quickly if their vehicle gets stuck or slides off the road.
“The western side of the county around Skipton, the Dales and parts of Harrogate district are experiencing heavy snow in many areas tonight.
“It’s forecast to continue through the night into tomorrow morning, and is likely to cause treacherous driving conditions tomorrow morning.
“Some main roads, including parts of the A66 and the A170 at Sutton Bank, are now closed.
“There’s also flooding on some roads in York.”
Their advice is not to travel if you don’t have to, don’t take unnecessary risks, and to pack a fully charged phone, blanket and shovel if driving.
One major North Yorkshire school, Tadcaster Grammar, is closed all day Monday.
Head teacher Mr Parkinson said: “We visited the site this afternoon and assessed the surrounding roads and condition of the school grounds, alongside communicating with the school bus companies.
“With a further weather warning in place for tomorrow, we believe that asking students, parents and staff to travel during the ongoing weather warning for ice would not be appropriate.”
A yellow weather warning for snow and ice covers much of North Yorkshire until midday on Monday.
Meanwhile, the snow and heavy rain has seen three new flood warnings come into place.
One of these is at the River Foss in York upstream of Yearsley Baths.
The Environment Agency says: “River levels are rising and will continue to rise in the morning of Monday (6 January). Areas most at risk include homes and businesses from Strensall to Yearsley Baths.
“We will continue to monitor water levels. Avoid using low lying footpaths and any bridges near local watercourses and do not attempt to walk, drive or cycle through flood water.”
The other flood warnings are:
- River Derwent at Stamford Bridge – The Weir Caravan Park and Kexby Bridge
- River Derwent at Buttercrambe Mill
- Bielby Beck at Bielby
Flood alerts include:
- River Foss
- Osbaldwick Beck and Tanghall Beck
- Lower River Derwent
- Upper River Derwent
- River Foulness and Market Weighton catchment
- River Seven catchment
- River Wiske and other tributaries of the River Swale.
Temperatures in York on Monday are forecast to reach a high of 4°C and a low of -2°C.
