A former rat-run that was blocked off by York council will soon reopen to traffic – albeit temporarily.
Penley’s Grove Street was controversially shut in September 2020 as part of a scheme to make the Groves traffic free.
That trial was made permanent in 2022.
However Penley’s Grove Street is to reopen to ‘light traffic’ during roadworks which will cause delays on Lord Mayor’s Walk.
The works are to allow Northern Gas Networks to install new, more durable plastic pipes.
Roadworks will begin on Lord Mayor’s Walk on Tuesday (30 May). They are expected to last three weeks.
Northern Gas Networks says: “Temporary traffic management will be put in place to allow engineers to carry out the work safely and efficiently, and to protect the public.
“The inbound lane on Lord Mayor’s Walk will be closed from Monday 12 June to Sunday 18 June and diversion routes will be in place.
“Penley’s Grove Street will be reopened as part of the diversion route for light vehicles only.
“A diversion route will also be in place for HGVs and larger vehicles around Huntington Road/ Haxby Road. All diversion routes will be clearly signed for traffic to follow.
“Parking restrictions on Lord Mayor’s Walk will be in place between Tuesday 30 May and Friday 18 June. Motorists will need to park elsewhere during this time.
“Customers with parking permits for Lord Mayor’s Walk will be allowed to use Monk Bar car park free of charge.”
Scott Kitchingman, business operations lead for Northern Gas Networks, said: “We would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused during these essential works. It is vital however, that we complete them to continue to maintain a safe and reliable gas supply to the residents of York.
“We want to assure residents and road users that we will be working hard to complete this essential scheme as safely and as quickly as possible.”
