A York restaurant is leaving the city to the dismay of many diners.
Vegan food specialist Döner Summer left its previous home in Gillygate in May and has since been operating from the Polymath cocktail bar on Grape Lane.
But it is now moving out of that bar – and leaving the city completely.
In a statement posted on social media, Döner Summer said: “This is an announcement we never expected to make, but it’s with a heavy heart that we’re saying goodbye to Polymath and York itself.
“We will post in more detail in a few days but we just wanted to let everyone know and that our last trading day will be Sunday August 11th.”
The restaurant revealed its decision to move from its Gillygate premises on 18 May.
“So yes, we are leaving the Gillygate store this Sunday for good, but we’re NOT leaving York. No way. Not a chance,” the post read.
“The Gillygate store has become extremely difficult to maintain and with the current site going up for sale and the never ending rising costs every hospitality business faces, the logical thing to do is to share these costs.”
It then described its new home at Polymath as “spectacular”.
Duo Andy Tordoff and Chris Riley-Smith launched Döner Summer in 2018 at Spark York.
It specialises in “vegan junk food” serving up burgers, kebabs, fried chick’n, and more.
Döner Summer then went on to launch restaurants in Huddersfield, Hull, Leeds, Sheffield, and Manchester.
Of these, only the Leeds venue will remain.
York diners were saddened by the news. “Gutted! You’ll be greatly missed,” one wrote.
“This is heartbreaking,” another said, while a third posted: “Noooo! That is so sad – you are the best restaurant in York – I’ve never had vegan chicken like it.”
