This grand doer upper house in York is now on the market.
Grade II listed building Ousefield House off Fulford Road is perhaps a budding restorer’s dream.
Designed by the York architect Walter Brierley and built in 1899, it boasts eight bedrooms on the first floor and what were five servants’ bedrooms on the floor above – as well as retaining many original features.
The house is up for sale with Carter Jonas for £1,500,000.

Walter Brierley designed the house for Mary Anne Wilberforce, the widow of William Wilberforce – a magistrate in the city, not the MP of the same name who spearheaded the abolition of slavery.
The estate agent’s particulars read: “This is set to be one of York’s most desirable family homes.
“The impressive Victorian building offers an appealing symmetrical façade with wooden framed sash windows arranged over three storeys. The property retains many original features including the main staircase, fireplaces, alcoves and coving.”

The total floor area is 7146 sq ft, or 663.92 sq m.
London Ebor Developments plc submitted plans to turn it back into a family home last year – which were approved in March 2023.
The plan will see a 1970s extension at the rear demolished. The single storey extension was added when the building was owned by the MoD.
There is also planning permission approved for a detached double garage.
The property is subject to a covenant stating it must remain as a single residential dwelling.
Viewings are strictly by appointment only. You can find the full details of the house here.
