York’s culinary credentials have received another boost.

Independent restaurant review site SquareMeal has released its latest top 100 of the best places to eat in Britain.

And York has secured three places on the list.

“Each of the top 100 results are a unique combination of our own in-house critic-led opinions and thousands of diner votes,” the website says.

“It’s this dual approach that makes our list incomparable, representing not only our professional opinion but thousands of real-life experiences that help to reinforce and bolster our final decisions.”

So which York venues made it into the UK’s Top 100 Restaurants?

#38 – Roots York

What they say: At Roots York, Tommy Banks serves a no-frills, hyper-seasonal menu in which fresh ingredients – sourced mostly from the Banks’ family farm – are given the chance to shine.

Banks has stuck to the ethos that won his original venue so many accolades: everything revolves around seasonal ingredients grown and foraged on the family farm, which are transformed into mouthfuls of pure joy.

#81 – Skosh

What they say: Skosh has built a cult following thanks to chef Neil Bentinck’s international small plates. Bentinck’s globe-trotting style takes inspiration from all over the world, and he blends these influences into a smart menu full of bold, colourful dishes.

There’s a big ‘wow’ factor here, whether you’re nibbling on crab puris with broad beans and tamarind, crispy Saddleback pork with fig ketchup or spring peas and radish with lemongrass, coconut and Thai basil.

The Cochon Aveugle (blind pig) is a dinner party-style surprise menu restaurant in York by chef Josh Overington. Here unusual ingredients are celebrated, often using French techniques, accompanied by a short list of carefully-selected wines.

Their mastery of seasonal flavours and locally sourced ingredients combined with outstanding service have put this place firmly on the map – although less can be said of the cheap-and-cheerful rustic-chic decor.

Also, The Angel at Hetton is placed at number 39 on the list. “Widely considered as the UK’s first real gastropub, The Angel has led the charge on elevated British grub for some years now. Guaranteeing a warm welcome and gutsy flavours, this is a bucket-list spot,” the judges say.
