Hollywood producers spend millions of pounds creating the right eerie atmosphere for their horror blockbusters.
But they would do better to save their money and come to York on a foggy night.
As these evocative photographs by our own David Dunning show, the autumnal fog envelops the historic city centre in a spine-tingling shroud of secrecy.
Walking through the streets last night, David captured the mists over the Ouse, the eerily-obscured view through the city bars, and Shambles looking like ghost central.
And with York being in lockdown, the city was almost deserted, adding to the eerie atmosphere.
