Popular York street Goodramgate is taking a step back in time this weekend – to celebrate the mystical traditions of midsummer.
The Saint John’s Eve Midsummer Celebrations will take place this weekend, on Sunday 25 June, from 10.30am.
The family-friendly fun day will include medieval re-enactors, fire themed face painting, fire eating displays, and much more.
As well as celebrating the start of summer, the festivities also mark Saint John’s Eve which is the eve of celebration before the Feast Day of Saint John the Baptist, first established in the 4th century A.D.
The free events taking place along the street have been organised by the Goodramgate Traders Association.
Fire is the most symbolic element associated with Saint John’s Eve, and as such there are several events during the day to ignite your excitement.
Watch an incredible fire-eating display outside Holy Trinity Church by performer Sidney Sparks, or head inside the church for fiery face painting by Face Paint York.
As well as face painting, there are more family events happening inside the church like stained glass themed crafts and a church mouse trail.

Medieval re-enactors Frei Compagnie will be on College Green with living history displays – and you can have your photo taken with a knight in armour!
They will then lead a medieval procession along Goodramgate.
During the day there will also be a decorated shop front competition with some of the businesses along the street, including Ambiente Tapas, Cleggs, Fancy Hanks, and The Old York Tea Room. The displays will be judged by York’s Civic Party.
There’s much more happening throughout the day, so head on down to Goodramgate this weekend to join in with the festivities.
