The Tonne of Tins appeal is back!
YorkMix is once again aiming to help tackle food poverty across York and North Yorkshire this winter with the return of the Tonne of Tins appeal – and we need your help.
The aim of the appeal, which launched today (Tuesday), is to collect a tonne of tinned goods to help food banks in our local communities.
By adding an extra tin or two to your weekly food shop to donate to the appeal, you can help make a big difference.
Our appeal is once again being supported by Yorkshire Profiles.
The Trussell Trust, which supports 1,400 food banks in the UK, distributed more than three million food packages last year – the most food parcels ever in a single year.
“It’s a really lamentable statistic,” said Adam Raffell, manager at York Foodbank. “We need some change.”
With the cost of living on the rise, it’s more important than ever that food banks are kept stocked for the people who need them. Many people are just one pay day away from financial hardship, and those who currently live on the poverty line are set to feel the financial hit harder than before.
“Unfortunately, with the increased pressures on household finances and problems across the city that does mean that there are more people now who need more than just the one visit,” said Adam.
“We’re there to try and address the situation and link people with the support that they need, so that hopefully they won’t need to return.”
This support can include conversations with local professionals like schools, surgeries, and social services.
David Green, managing director of YorkMix, said: “Many people think of York and North Yorkshire as affluent areas, but the truth is food banks are used daily across the whole county.
“We shouldn’t have to rely on them, but they have become a way of life and it’s important to us at YorkMix to support all of our community, through good times and bad.
“A Tonne of Tins is a lot to collect but we know it can be done!”
