A York bar has closed suddenly, to the dismay of its regulars.
The Hand, on York Road, Acomb, now appears to be permanently shut.
Both its Instagram feed and its website say ‘Now closed’.
The Hand was a freehouse and bottleshop. It opened two years ago after the unit was converted from part of Thomas The Baker, which continued to operate in a smaller premises next door.
It became a favourite with many thanks to the selection of wines and craft beers.
The Hand also hosted kitchen takeovers, with new menus put on by local food creators.
There has been no explanation for its sudden closure.
Writing on Facebook, one regular said: “I’ll really miss it – it was such an asset for our community and lovely experience with the new food pop ups.”
Other reactions included: “Ah man, absolutely gutted, great vibe, excellent local selection of beers.”
And: “No way! That’s the worst news ever. I love this place. So gutted.”

The Hand began as a collaboration between Ashley and Matthew Hyde and their business partner Greg Harper.
They originally planned to open a bar called the Ham & Firkin in the former Lloyds Bank building on Front Street, Acomb.
But they withdrew that planning application in favour of the one to create a bar at 55 York Road.
Greg is still listed as the licensee for property, which formerly opened daily until 11pm.
He also remains a director of Ham & Firkin Ltd, alongside Antar Walker. Ashley Hyde resigned as a director in July 2022, and Matthew Hyde resigned as a director in September 2023.
