The cold snap is coming to an end – but the freezing temperatures will make way for stormy weather this weekend.
Storm Isha will sweep in on Sunday and the Met Office has this morning issued an amber weather warning which covers York and North Yorkshire.
It runs from 6pm on Sunday to 9am on Monday. Heavy rain is also expected.
Forecasters said there was a risk to life in coastal areas from large waves and debris being blown inland.
The amber wind warnings also mean potential power cuts and loss of mobile phone signal in affected areas, while roads and bridges are likely to be shut and rail and bus services could face delays and cancellations.
The forecaster says there could be travel disruption, damage to buildings and flying debris, as southwesterly winds of up to 80mph could hit exposed coasts and there could be gusts of up to 60mph inland.
During a wet and windy weekend across northern England, the heaviest downpours are expected during Sunday as 30-50mm could fall in many places and there is potential for peaks of 80-100mm over hills.
Electricity network operator Northern Powergrid said it was “Northern Powergrid is “ready and prepared in the event of any disruption to power supplies as a result of the strong winds and rain”.
A spokesperson said: “We’re getting in touch with our customers on how to be prepared and what to do if they experience a power cut.
“Our teams are on stand-by to be deployed to any affected areas and are prepared to help restore power as quickly as possible.”
The good weather new is, it will be milder. After another chilly night, with temperatures falling to 1°C tonight (Friday), temperatures will start to climb.
Forecasters say the top temperature on Saturday will be 6°C followed by a high of 11°C on Sunday.
Met Office deputy chief meteorologist David Hayter said: “The Atlantic influence will introduce some wet and windy weather, with a deep area of low pressure approaching from the west on Sunday.
“While detail is still being worked out, we expect windy weather for many and some heavy rain in the west and so we’ve issued warnings for Sunday for wind and rain.”
