York-based theatre company Out of Character have announced their very first patron – actor Mark Addy!
The York star is known for his roles in The Full Monty and Games of Thrones among many more screen roles, and has graced local stages such as York Theatre Royal and the Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough.
Out of Character is a York-based theatre company comprising of actors with lived experience of mental ill health – and hope to continue their vital work and growing reputation and impact across York.
On joining Out of Character as the company’s very first patron, Mark Addy said, “I’m honoured to become patron of Out Of Character, as I am aware of the impact that mental health issues can have on an individual’s life.
“A company that provides a safe space for a diverse range of performers and audience is a welcome one, and the work that Out of Character does has valuable therapeutic benefits as well as being enjoyable for performers and audience alike.”
Addy’s patronage comes as the company prepares for their next original production, seeing them partner with the youth theatre at York Theatre Royal to create a teenage toolkit for mental health.
‘Out of the Box’ will be devised by the company members, collaborating with 40 14-19 year olds to explore the lessons, advice and experiences of mental health across the generations.
This new production will be staged at York St John University from Tuesday 10 to Thursday 12 December 2024. Ticket and booking information will be available soon.
