A former York City captain is returning to Bootham Crescent, as the club unveils its first signing of the summer.
Russell Penn, 32, rejoined City today (Tuesday). He made 109 appearances for the club between January 2014 and May 2016.
Penn helped the club qualify for the League Two promotion play-offs in 2014 and also scored the goal that secured the club’s Football League survival in 2015.
Following City’s relegation to the National League in 2016 he joined Carlisle United.
He made only two appearances for the Cumbrians and spent the majority of his one year deal on loan with Gateshead and Wrexham.
He subsequently joined Gateshead on a permanent deal last summer and made 40 appearances, helping them to a 17th placed finish in the National League in the season just ended.
Originally from Dudley in the West Midlands, Penn started his career as a youth player at Birmingham City before turning professional with Scunthorpe United.
We will be carrying an interview with Russell later.
He has also played for Kidderminster Harriers, Alvechurch (loan), Burton Albion, and Cheltenham Town.
