The Food Awards England have announced their finalists for 2022 – and four York establishments have made the list.
The annual foodie award aims to celebrate “the best in the food industry”, so it makes sense that several places in York would make the cut.
Fine-dining restaurant Melton’s was nominated for Restaurant of the Year, cosy bistro Cafe No. 8 was nominated for Cafe/Bistro of the Year, Japanese restaurant Ipfu was nominated for Best Oriental Establishment, and York Cookery School was nominated for Cookery School of the Year.
The York location for the hummus and pita bar Humpit was nominated for Best Vegetarian Establishment, but unfortunately Humpit is no longer in York – though it does have locations in Leeds and Sheffield.
“We are really delighted to be nominated,” said Martin Gore, co-owner of Cafe No. 8. “It’s been a tough few years for everyone and this sort of recognition puts smiles on faces.
“What is particularly pleasing for us is that since the pandemic we have gone back to our beginnings of almost twenty years ago, where the business revolves primarily around myself and my business partner – chef Chris Pragnell – plus a handful of invaluable part timers.
“The positive feedback that we receive would suggest that we have made the right decision.”
The ceremony to announce the winners will welcome some of the top professionals of the country’s food sector.
The black-tie event will take place in Manchester in June 2022.

A spokesperson for The Food Awards England said, “The finalists were voted for by the public for providing authentic recipes and unique dishes to their diners, creating memorable experiences for both residents and visitors.
“We would like to wish all the finalists the best of luck and we can’t wait to welcome all our guests and celebrate the winners with them.”
