The famous InterCity 125 High Speed Train will no longer serve York from this autumn.
They provided new levels of comfort and speed when introduced on services to London in the late 70s.
They were replaced in 2019 when the Azuma fleet was introduced.
Before that they had been confined to trains serving Aberdeen and Inverness after the East Coast Main Line was electrified in 1991 and the InterCity 225 trains arrived.
Since the Azuma Trains took over the only opportunity to see an HST on a scheduled service through York and Northallerton has been with the CrossCountry trains between Scotland and the South West.
By the October timetable these will all be replaced by newer Voyager Trains and the classic HST will be gone from North Yorkshire for good. (Some will remain in Scotland on the Glasgow/Edinburgh to the Highlands service)
A CrossCountry spokesperson told RailAdvent: “While our High Speed Trains have served us well, they have been in use for over 40 years.
“We are making some changes to our fleet when the next timetable change is introduced in May.
“This is to enable us to run a more efficient service that also reflects the way people are now travelling for business and leisure and requires fewer trains to deliver the number of seats customers need at present.
“As such, there will be a phased removal of the High Speed Trains from the CrossCountry fleet.”
