The manager of a York pub has told how the building shook when a raider smashed windows to gain entry.
Bella Brunton, manager of the Angel On The Green on Bishopthorpe Road, said the robber struck at about 4.45am on Monday.
“It felt like the building shook about three times. That was them trying to gain access. And then the burglar alarm went off,” she told YorkMix.
“They used two bricks to break through. We’ve got very nice big open windows, floor to ceiling ones.
“But they tried on one of the bigger ones and couldn’t break through. So then they tried a smaller one, and got through that one.”
Bella got dressed and went downstairs. “But they were already gone by that point. It was just an in-and-out kind of job.”
They took the cash drawer. “If you know anything about hospitality, you know that there’s not very much money left in a till overnight, because people cash up.

“It’s just a float – very little, actually, that they got away with.”
YorkMix understands the cash drawer was found abandoned nearby.
Bella said police have taken the break-in very seriously and had carried out a full forensic investigation. They are also checking CCTV for clues to the identity of the perpetrators.
The pub was closed on Monday as Bella cleaned up the debris. It reopened today – complete with fairy lights arranged around the boarded up windows.
The Angel On The Green raid on Monday was similar to one on a café on Shambles at 1am yesterday (Tuesday).
Someone threw a drain cover through the door of the Earl Grey Tea Rooms and again took the cash drawer, along with charity collecting boxes.
