A teenager died of a head injury in a crash on the A64 near York, a coroner’s court heard.
An inquest opened today (Friday) into the death of George Edward Sawyer, 18.
George was killed as he was crossing the carriageway near Bilbrough Top, between York and Tadcaster.
North Yorkshire Police said at the time that a black BMW that was travelling along the eastbound carriageway was in collision with him shortly before 1.20am on Monday 27 March.
Opening the inquest, North Yorkshire Coroner Jon Heath said: “Mr Sawyer was walking along the A64 when he was struck by a motor vehicle, causing fatal injuries.”
The provisional cause of death was blunt head injury.
Mr Heath adjourned the hearing for a full inquest, at a date to be fixed.
Greatly missed
George studied arable agriculture at Askham Bryan College near York. After the tragedy, the college opened a book of condolence and flew its flag at half mast.
College principal Tim Whitaker said in March: “George will be greatly missed by students and staff, who are trying to come to terms with this shocking and sudden loss. We are supporting them at this very difficult time.”
Staff from the agriculture department said: “He was an outstanding, dedicated, knowledgeable and skilled student with a great passion for the course and agriculture in general.
“George will also be remembered for his brilliant sense of humour, the ability to make everyone in a room smile and to always lift the mood and get everyone working.”

He also played for the Huddersfield Rugby Union Football Club.
The club held a tribute to the talented player before a match on 1 April, including a minute’s silence.
The club’s academy manager Tracy Davis said then: “George was loved and respected by his team-mates and coaches.
“He was a wonderful young man and it has been an absolute pleasure to have him play at HRUFC through our age grades. I am sure George’s family have some great memories of their time at Lockwood Park.
“We would like (parents) Sarah, Phil and (sister) Lucy to know that at this time of unimaginable grief, their rugby family has their arms around them and are here to offer all the support we can.”
