A teenager has been arrested after a video was shared which showed a young York City fan being attacked at the club’s stadium.
The footage showed a boy being repeatedly punched in the face by a youth in the toilets of the LNER Community Stadium.
The victim is then seen leaving the toilets while others laugh at him.
It happened on 20 July during the pre-season friendly between City and Grimsby Town.
A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “We’d like to reassure people that we are aware of the incident, and an investigation is underway.
“One suspect, a teenage boy, has been arrested on suspicion of assault in connection with the incident. A further suspect has also been interviewed and both have been released on bail.
“We ask people not to share the footage further, and avoid speculating about the incident, while our enquiries continue.”
York City FC issued a statement saying: “York Stadium Management Company and North Yorkshire Police dealt with the incident on the day of the game, against Grimsby Town, and informed York City of the incident.
“York City Football Club and York Stadium Management Company are reassured that North Yorkshire Police are carrying out a full, thorough investigation.
“Appropriate sanctions will be handed out once the active police investigation into this case has concluded.
