A taxi driver has been robbed at knifepoint in York – a crime that has left the wider cab trade in shock.
At 3.40am yesterday (Tuesday), a passenger in a taxi pulled a knife on the driver on Dale Street.
He took a bag which contained cash, then left the vehicle and ran away.
A 26-year-old man from York has been arrested on suspicion of robbery. He is currently helping police with their enquiries and remains in police custody.
Inspector Andrew Godfrey of the York City Neighbourhood Policing team said:
This incident is unacceptable and an investigation to establish the full circumstances is underway.
Understandably members of the taxi community are shocked by this incident. I would stress that we currently believe this is an isolated incident and don’t believe there is any wider risk to taxi drivers in the city.
Police are requesting the public’s assistance to help establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
Officers are appealing to anyone who may have seen anyone acting suspiciously in the area at the time of the incident.
