A takeaway has been taken to court after serving a meal complete with a cockroach inside.
Selby District Council has prosecuted Bengal Spice in Osgodby for hygiene breaches.
At York Magistrates’ Court today (Friday), the operators of the food business pleaded guilty to three charges of breaching food safety and hygiene regulations.

The prosecution follows a report in December 2021 to the council after a customer found a small beetle in a takeaway meal from Bengal Spice.
This was later identified as a German cockroach.
Officers visited the Osgodby takeaway and found a signification infestation of German cockroaches throughout the premises including food preparation and storage areas.
The business agreed to close, deal with the infestation, and carry out a deep clean before being allowed to reopen a week later.
The food business operators were charged with three counts of breaching Food Safety and Hygiene (England) Regulations 2013.
The food business operator, Bangla Catering Ltd, received a fine of £8,000 and was ordered to pay costs of £4,000.
