Fire crews closed a street in York city centre this evening.
Goodramgate was taped off, with firefighters and police at the scene.
It followed reports of smoke coming from one of the buildings.
Witnesses told YorkMix that thick black smoke was seen from the roof of one of the buildings.
There was also a gassy smell on the street, which was closed off from The Hilt to Tesco Express for more than an hour.
Firefighters used the aerial ladder to investigate.

One member of the public at the scene said the smoke appeared to be emerging from the roof above the Bab Tooma and Yak & Yeti restaurants, but this is unconfirmed.
A North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service spokesperson said they were called at 4.36pm, adding: “Crews from York, Acomb and Tadcaster responded to reports of smoke coming from the roof of an industrial premises. This incident is currently ongoing.”
Goodramgate had reopened by 6pm with the fire crews returning to base.
