A York business is planning changes after street food smells and noise started to cause it problems.

Skipton Building Society on Parliament Street plans to make significant changes to curb the issue.

The rear of the building backs onto Newgate and is right next to some of the Shambles Market street food stalls.

The problem is outlined in planning documents.

“With regards to noise and smell, the rear elevation of the property directly faces the range of street food stalls on Newgate Market, and over recent months the level of noise and smells from these busy stalls have started to impact upon the building society, whose customer facing offices (where customers receive financial advice, discuss mortgages and savings) sit directly against these windows, both at ground and first floor level.”

The business is asking City of York Council for permission to install new double glazed windows. As well as keeping out the noise and smells it would better insulate the building.

A plywood fascia would be replaced with new white painted hardwood timber fascia and new window frames would be installed.

There are also some changes planned to the interior layout of the building society.

While the Parliament Street side of the building dates from 1836-39 and is Grade II listed, the Newgate extension dates from the 1960s-70s, according to planning documents.

“This part of the building, which is not referred to in the Listed Building entry, has no heritage significance,” a statement says.
