York Christmas Market will not open tomorrow (Saturday, 7 December), on one of the busiest Saturdays of the year.
Shambles Market is also shut tomorrow.
Organisers of the Christmas market, Make It York, say they are monitoring the situation closely and it may reopen on Sunday.
A spokesperson said: “The forecast predicts strong north to north-westerly gusts of up to 55 to 57mph, accompanied by heavy rain, creating unsafe conditions for both trading and visiting.
“The safety of our traders, visitors, and staff remains our top priority. While this decision has been made independently, we are also aware that other Christmas markets are closing in response to similar adverse weather conditions.
“We regret any inconvenience caused and appreciate your understanding during this challenging situation.”
Make It York says it will review the forecast tomorrow afternoon and provide an update regarding trading on Sunday as soon as possible.
Shambles Market is closed tomorrow too:
It comes after the organisers of the Malton Christmas Festival this weekend decided to cancel.
In North Yorkshire, there’s a yellow weather warning for rain in place from 6am to 11.59pm tomorrow (Saturday, 7 December).
And there’s a yellow warning for high winds running for 24 hours from 6am tomorrow.
Met Office chief forecaster Jason Kelly said on Friday: “The worst impacts from Storm Darragh will be felt as we go through the early hours of tomorrow morning and throughout Saturday.”
