York is known for many wonderful things, but being a home for sporting thrill seekers isn’t one of them.
But perhaps that should change. Because the city has made it onto the new Extreme Sports Map of the UK.
Featuring such blood-pumping activities as skyboarding, white water tubing and tank paintballing, the map has been created by GoPro, the sporty camera people, along with Currys PC World.
So what put York on the map?
Fast and furious
The York Land Yacht Club is the answer to that question.
Based at Elvington Airfield south of the city, it’s the only British landsailing airfield-based club in Britain.
Powered by wind alone, club members race along one of the longest runways in Europe.
With the right conditions they can get up to amazing speeds – the world land speed record for a wind-powered vehicle is 126mph.

The club also hosts one of the events in the British Championship, taking place in March.
And they regularly head over to Redcar to compete on the sands.
Anyone keen to try out the sport can arrange trial sessions, training and instruction with club members.
