Spiritato!
Thurs 8 Dec, 7.30pm, NCEM
Guts and Glory: Heroic Music for Strings, Trumpets and Drums
Pioneering period instrument ensemble Spiritato! make their NCEM debut led by violinist Kinga Ujszaszi.
This vibrant programme presents baroque brass at its dazzling best. Featuring virtuosic works by Biber and Schmelzer, the ensemble blends the martial sound of no less than five natural trumpets with inventive and reflective pieces for strings – a showcase of all the pomp and majesty of an Imperial Court at the height of its powers.
In Echo
Thurs 15 Dec, 7.30pm, NCEM
Northern soul: Music in a Cold Climate
The sea-faring nations of 17th century Northern Europe were closely connected, trading everything from iron, wool, books, salt and soldiers, to music and ideas. Led by Gawain Glenton who ‘reaches dazzling heights on his cornett’ (The Latest), 17th century northern musicians look to one another for inspiration with music by Buxtehude, Staden, Dowland, Bertali and Dietrich Becker alongside Andrew Keeling’s new composition Northern Soul.
Other highlights…
Plus the NCEM’s latest Eeemerging Residency; The Goldfinch Ensemble (Sat 10 Dec, 1pm) join us from The Hague for a lunchtime concert with a programme reflecting the genius of two European masters of their craft: JS Bach and F Couperin; and we welcome back Renaissance (Tues 13 Dec, 7.30pm) directed by former University of York student Ben Rowarth with Un Soir de Neige: A Night of Snow.
