There were magical scenes in Shambles as the snow arrived right on cue.
The wintry shower could not have been timed better on the second late night shopping evening of the Christmas season.
But that was no accident – because the snow, of course, was artificial.
A successful crowdfunding campaign saw the Shambles Area Traders Association purchase ten snow machines.
And they went into action for the first time on Thursday night (November 23).

If you missed it, don’t worry. The snow will be back every Thursday night up to December 21 between 5pm and 7pm.
Certainly the shoppers loved it – especially the children.
“We wanted to do something a little special for Christmas this year and we wanted to do something to encourage independent businesses on the Shambles to stay open for late night shopping on a Thursday,” said Phil Pinder, chair of the association.
“We borrowed one snow machine last Thursday and the response from the public was incredible. I’ve never seen the street so busy at that time.”
The snow machines were crowdfunded on Spacehive and predominantly paid for by Shambles traders, members of the public and the York BID.
