Smarter York Spring Clean: Dunnington in Bloom volunteers lend a helping hand

28 May, 2013 by Press Release

Issued by City of York Council

The Smarter York Spring Clean will be entering its final stage next week which will include Dunnington in Bloom volunteers joining forces with City of York Council and the North Yorkshire and York probation trust to help clear the parishes of any litter.

In the final week of the Smarter York Spring Clean the team will be focusing their efforts on the outer lying parishes of York. Residents are invited to nominate any communal spaces they think are in need of a spring clean this could be anything from litter picking to painting over graffiti.

Councillor David Levene, Cabinet Member for Environmental services, said: “The partnership between the Smarter York team and the North Yorkshire and York Probation Trust has shown to be very beneficial for the previous locations in the past three weeks.

“Therefore I hope residents from the outer parishes are forthcoming with any work they think is suitable for the team to carry out. If any work is not completed during the week that is suitable it will be completed as soon as possible”.

To follow on from the work that the Smarter York, Dunnington in Bloom and North Yorkshire and York teams will be doing throughout the week, an event will be held at Oaken Grove Community centre in Haxby on Saturday June 1 from 10am-2pm. Residents will be able to sign up to the Smarter Charter and pledge that they will help to keep York clean and tidy.

Smarter York aims to help maintain a clean, green and safe environment for York. The initiative encourages and works with residents to create attractive neighbourhoods with a real sense of community and to tackle the things that can spoil our neighbourhoods for example littering or graffiti.

Any suitable work that is put forward by residents that is not completed in May will be completed in the coming months in an on going partnership between the council and the Trust’s Community Payback team.

For more information please visit the Smarter York page on the council website or follow @SmarterYork on Twitter. Residents can nominate an area they think is in need of a spring clean by calling 01904 551551, emailing the council, or by downloading the Smarter York mobile phone application from all app stores.
