The team working on renovating the half pipe ramp at Norton and Malton Skatepark had to down tools today to help fight a van fire.
Ryan Swain was involved and told us what happened:
“It involved a Highway Maintenance van and we noticed that it had started smoking. It was then engulfed in flames.
“Thankfully nobody was hurt or injured and the situation which escalated quickly was dealt with by North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue.
“We tried to put it out with a small fire extinguisher that we had in the work van along with buckets of water from the river but the fire was way out of control for the lads.
“The fire service arrived and dealt with the situation. Thoughts go out to the driver.”
North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said later that they thought it had been caused by a battery fault.
