A York office block was evacuated after a lift caught fire.

Firefighters were called to the building on Rougier Street, home to Arriva Rail North, at 2.41pm on Monday (April 16).

Crews from York, Acomb and Harrogate responded to reports of smoke issuing from the lift motor room on the top floor of the six storey office block.

Firefighters investigated and stood by until a lift engineer attended. It was discovered that a small fire had occurred in a lift door, but was already out.

Some staff were waiting outside for more than an hour and a half before the all clear was given and they could return to work.
