A list of the top 100 restaurants in Britain has been published – and it includes six from North Yorkshire.
Independent restaurant guide SquareMeal’s Top 100 is created via thousands of reader votes and its own expert critics.
They described North Yorkshire as a “powerhouse culinary county”. Here are the restaurants that made it into the hot 100, and at what position.
10 – Myse
Main Street, Hovingham
“True hospitality is an art attempted by many but perfected by few. Myse in Yorkshire is of the latter ilk, offering an expertly polished, proper northern welcome and mind-bendingly good, gallery-worthy food.”
15 – Angel at Hetton
The Angel Inn, Hetton
“From the outside The Angel at Hetton is a quintessential Yorkshire pub. Inside, however, has been hollowed out and filled with crisp plaster, living fungus screens, and bonsai trees in a series of linked rooms. However good the interiors, the food is the biggest draw. Michael Wignall is a man who’s been collecting Michelin stars for decades.”
27 – Shaun Rankin at Grantley Hall
Grantley Hall, Ripon
“The ten-course triumph starts with drinks and a parade of snacks in the plush, pastel-decorated dining room before you’re ushered through to begin the menu proper. Rankin’s commitment to using fresh, natural and seasonal ingredients from his native Yorkshire means he rarely ventures beyond the kitchen garden for fruit, vegetables and herbs.”
28 – Roots York
Marygate, York
“The eagerly anticipated second restaurant from Chef Tommy Banks of the Michelin-starred Black Swan at Oldstead was always going to be a success. Having revamped what was the old Bay Horse pub into a contemporary space for fine dining; Banks has stuck to the ethos that won his original venue so many accolades: everything revolves around seasonal ingredients grown and foraged on the family farm, which are transformed into mouthfuls of pure joy.”
31 – Forge at Middleton Lodge
Middleton Lodge Estate, Middleton Tyas
“Forge is designed to offer guests a timeless, classic dining experience that transcends the ordinary. Making use of each of the beautiful four seasons and surroundings of its Yorkshire landscape, Forge takes direction from the Old Farmer’s Almanac, sharing notes from the kitchen, gardens and greenhouses.”
68 – The Abbey Inn Byland
Byland, York
“It’s hard to imagine Michelin-starred chef Tommy Banks washing pots here as a child, who 25 odd years later now occupies the role of chef director at The Abbey Inn. It’s something of a full-circle moment. Together with his team, he’s helped transform the 19th-century inn into a destination restaurant and pub with rooms, and the results are dazzling.”
