Six ghosts were stolen from York.
Previously named as the most haunted city in Europe, York was half a dozen ghosts lighter after the thieves struck under the cover of darkness.
Police launched an investigation into the phantom felony – but the story has a happy ending.

The ghosts were taken from The York Ghost Merchants on Shambles.
Six of their unique model ghosts were positioned on top of the fascia above the shop window.
“Sadly we noticed last week that these six ghosts had been stolen,” the York Ghost Merchants reported on Instagram.
“A ladder or other devious method must have been used during the night to remove them.”
Turned up on eBay
Each of the six figures that were ghost-napped were “slightly imperfect – a ‘ragamuffin’ and not able to take its place on the shelves of the shop below. They bear their own unique markings which make them easy to identify.”
And the shop’s followers soon spotted three of the missing ghosts again – when they turned up for sale on eBay.
The shop said: “Please do not bid on the Large Dandy 5, Large Bone White or Large White Sullied Phantom all now for sale and listed from York. The other three remain at large.
“The police have been informed and took seriously the report of ‘stolen ghosts’ after initial incertitude.”
The ghost merchants appealed to the thieves to turn the ghosts in.
“We firstly appeal to the conscience of the individual(s) to remove the listings from Ebay and to perhaps post these ghosts back through our letterbox under the cover of darkness.”
And in an update they shared some good news – the ghosts were “delisted from Ebay and safely returned to the shop”.
So they’re back to their old haunts.
