mix-six-logo-rightIf you’re planning a weekend of good food, but want to save money for that longed for holiday, take a look at our six top places to eat in York for under a tenner.

We’ve chosen places that offer gastronomic joy along with great value. (Elasticated trousers a must).

Khao San Road

Located on Walmgate, Khao San Road offers up two courses for £10 over weekend lunchtimes. With big portions, aroma and spice, each dish is a delight (and a bargain to boot!).

Choose from such dishes as beef panaeng, green and red curries or chicken satay. You won’t be disappointed.

Goji

A vegetarian restaurant to please even the biggest of carnivores. Packed full of art and colour, Goji on Goodramgate has a substantial veggie/ vegan menu and at lunchtime it’s all under £10.

Whether you opt for a hot dog (£6.10) or some homity pie (£7.85), make sure you leave space for their excellent cakes.

Meltons Too

The more central sister to Meltons, Meltons Too on Walmgate offers up a simple £7 menu if you eat before 7pm.

Share a Lebanese mezze (£6.50) or fill up on a pulled beef Yorkshire pud (£7.90) and have almost enough money left over for a plate full of chocolate pot, brownie, ice cream and chocolate cake – better known as the devilishly good chocolate sharer (£8 for two).

Ambiente Tapas

If the English summer is letting you down head to Ambiente on Goodramgate for some Spanish sunshine.

Between noon and 6pm on weekdays you can devour three of their tapas plates for a snip under £10. An early evening of chorizo y patatas, butter bean stew, salt cod fritters or slow cooked pork belly awaits.

Le Langhe

Fancy some top class Italian food? Try lunch at Le Langhe on Peasholme Green. Here you can indulge in a board of six cheeses for just £8.

If cheese isn’t your thing, they have meat boards, pasta and soup all coming in way below £10. Lunch can also be eaten in their garden, gazing upon the Bar Walls.

Riverside at City Screen

For something a bit different, take your tastebuds to the Riverside Café at the cinema. Far from being a sideline to the flicks, this place has a really good menu, great coffee and enviable view of the river.

Most of their dishes come in under a tenner – try the smoked mackerel & fennel salad (£8) or a classic fish finger sandwich (£6.80). A a great place to read the papers or lounge around post-film.
