The road affected by a sink hole in York is set to stay closed for several more days.

YorkMix reported on Tuesday that the hole had opened on South Bank Avenue, close to its junction with Bishopthorpe Road.

Police and fire crews attended. Among them was station watch manager Andy White from Acomb Fire Station, who told us: “On the face of it, it looks quite a small hole.

“But there’s actually quite a large cavern underneath – maybe about 8m by 8m.”

At the time, the cause of the sink hole was unclear. But further investigations have discovered it is a problem with the sewer under the road.

Now a temporary road closure has been issued for South Bank Avenue, ending at midnight on Wednesday, 23 February – more than a week after the hole appeared.

That is to allow time for repairs to the sewer.

If work is completed before that time, the road will reopen then. In the meantime, diversions remain in place.
