Thursday’s performance at the Grand Opera House was cancelled after fire broke out at the theatre.

Fire crews from York, Acomb, Huntington and Selby went to the theatre after getting a call at 5.40pm.

The fire was contained in the stage area and is now out. There are no reports of any injuries.

It happened between matinee and evening performances so no audience members were in the theatre.

Shortly after 6pm the theatre posted on its Facebook page:

  • Please bear with us.

Tonight’s performance of Rock of Ages will not go ahead due to an incident at the theatre – emergency services are at the theatre – we will keep you all informed when we have an update.

Everyone is safe. We will be in touch with customers as soon as possible. Thank you for your understanding.

It added at about 10pm;: “Thanks for the kind and concerned comments. Everyone here is fine and we will be getting in touch with customers who were booked for tonight’s show.”

Rock of Ages stars Antony Costa, formerly of the boy band Blue, playing a fictional rock legend, alongside Kevin Kennedy and Zoe Birkett.

It is due to run at the Grand Opera House until Saturday.
