‘Shocking’ amounts of rubbish dumped under ‘No Fly Tipping’ sign in York
A former York council leader has chronicled ‘shocking’ fly-tipping next to a road in the city.
Steve Galloway took these picture of the mess left on Askham Lane, between Foxwood Lane and the A1237 ring road, and published them on his blog.
He counted more than 20 black bags, possibly filled with domestic rubbish, as well as old carpets in a nearby layby.
“The area has been subject to problems in the past but not of this scale,” Steve told YorkMix Radio.
“We’ve got local volunteers who actually walked down there clearing litter but they can’t handle that kind of scale of dumping.”
He described those responsible as “very selfish” and urged residents to make sure they’re using a licensed contractor to dispose of any rubbish.
City of York Council have been contacted and hopefull be clearing up the rubbish soon, Steve said.
Fly tippers risk an unlimited fine or even imprisonment. The council can deploy covert surveillance cameras at rubbish hotspots, Steve said.
