Part of York’s most famous street remains closed off today (Wednesday).
The whole street was shut for a time this morning. Barriers were placed at both ends of Shambles. Shoppers were told to leave the street.
It followed roof tiles crashing onto the famous cobbles in the high winds.
Luckily, no one was hurt. But the fear was that more tiles could come down as Storm Jocelyn continues to batter York.
YorkMix understands two tiles fell from the old buildings.
The barriers have now been removed from the ends of Shambles, but about a third of the street remains closed off.
The shut area runs from Little Shambles down to The Christmas Shop and Society of Alchemists.
One worker told YorkMix that City of York Council had ordered the closure on safety grounds. The council owns many of the properties on Shambles.
We have asked City of York Council about the situation and will update when we get a response.
