Looking for somewhere to meet friends outdoors in York?
Well, you’re in luck! Lots of new outdoor seating areas are popping up across the city centre, thanks to the York BID.
They come complete with colourful tables and benches, and bee-friendly planters too.
You can consume food and drink from local businesses at all these different spots too.
More are coming – but here are seven already up and running, in addition to the Thor’s Tipi on Parliament Street. They are the perfect places to enjoy the sunshine.
1. Exhibition Square
A great suntrap, Exhibition Square now has benches and smaller grassbox seats for the kids. It’s right in front of York Art Gallery and the fountain, and there’s often an ice cream kiosk in the square too.
2. Duncombe Place
Unwind under the majestic eye of the Minster. The benches are in addition to the existing seating near the war memorial.
3. The Esplanade
Just down from the city walls, the Esplanade offers great river views, across to Star Inn The City and the ice cream boat.
4. City Screen Riverside
Another riverside spot, the decking behind City Screen now boasts tables and planters.
5. Waterstones
Also next to City Screen, these seats are to the side of Waterstones just off Coney Street. And for the time being Bob Dylan will keep you company too.
6. The Coppergate Centre
Found next to the old Boots shop, now bedecked with the Guardians of York artwork, the tables here are perfect for a pre-Primark prandial break.
7. Library Square
There’s only one new bench here for now, although more are expected to follow. Why not read a good book while you relax next to the library?
