It’s a confident boast – and one we can soon put to the test.
A firm that claims it sells ‘the world’s best doughnuts’ is set to open a shop in York.
Project D is opening a coffee and doughnut shop at 10 Parliament Street soon.
It is the former Carphone Warehouse outlet, between HSBC and Vision Express.
Of course that boast of selling the ‘world’s best doughnuts’ will be tested by fans of York’s own Doe Bakehouse, with its shop on nearby Church Street…
So who are Project D? “Project D was founded in 2018 by three friends who shared a passion and love for food. They travelled the world in search of the perfect doughnut,” the website says.
The trio, Matthew Bond, Max Poynton and David Watts, are based in Derby, but were inspired by the doughnuts of New York.
They began by selling at markets in the East Midlands and had three shops in the area.
In 2020, they swapped their indoor shopping centre kiosks for outdoor pop-up shops and launched a home delivery service due to the pandemic.
Later that year they expanded their online operation to deliver doughnuts nationwide.
Their doughnuts include the Homer – dipped in pink coloured white chocolate and covered in Homer Simpson sprinkles – the red velvet, the lemon and poppy seed and the bad boy, filled with caramel sauce.
Online, you can buy a box of four from £16.95 and a box of six from £24.95. Many of the doughnuts are vegan.
