The big Selby Lights Switch On and Market this Saturday has fallen victim to the weather
High winds are forecast and there are safety concerns.
There will be what’s described as a low key switch on of the lights and an event in the Abbey will still go ahead but everything else has had to be called off.
It was the same last year too but that was because of Covid.
Storm Arwen will bring very strong winds across eastern Scotland and northeast England with an Amber alert in force from Friday in northern parts of North Yorkshire.
Selby and York have a Yellow level warning on Saturday.

Selby Town Council Market and Events Manager, Alison Copsey, told YorkMix Radio more
“We have been watching the weather forecast all week and it’s gradually got worse in terms of the gale force winds that are predicted for Saturday.
“Whilst it also says snow and rain that doesn’t bother us but the gale force winds really mean we have to think about the safety of not just the market traders, but the general public too.”
“So it’s rubbish, especially with us having to cancel last year due to Covid but as I say our first concern is everybody’s safety.
“So there’s no market now on Saturday, but Selby Abbey still have a Christmas event which will be taking place inside the Abbey.
However, the Selby town council event that was taking place on market place, along with YorkMix Radio, is completely cancelled.
“There will be a very low key light switch on with the Mayor”
