Two fire crews tackled a house blaze in the Selby area this afternoon.
A neighbour called 999 at about 1.50pm after spotting smoke coming from the property in the Eggborough area.
They also alerted the home owners to the blaze.
When firefighters arrived they found a utility/workshop room to the rear of the semi-detached house well alight.
They had to remove the roof to tackle the blaze. Two firefighters used breathing apparatus and four jets were used.
Two people from the house, and an adult and two children from the adjoining semi-detached property, were safely evacuated while the fire was put out.
Crews were on the scene for about two hours. The utility room and its contents were severely damaged, but they stopped the fire spreading to the main house.
It is not yet clear what started the blaze. A fire investigation officer has been called in to determine the cause.
